Images. They are so compelling that we cannot not
watch them! Research supports the idea that visual communication can be more
powerful than verbal communication, suggesting in many instances that people
learn and retain information that is presented to them visually much better
than that which is only provided verbally. The psychologist Jerome Bruner of New
York University has described studies that show that people only remember 10%
of what they hear
and 20% of what they read, but about 80% of what they see and do. Indeed, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Photographs have revolutionized human social communication. The history of human social interchange has evolved through three distinct phases: oral, text-based, and now image-centered communication.

A picture is powerful not only to communicate information and
ideas, but also to convey feelings and emotions. The impact of a picture is
understandably greater as it engages that part of a person that causes one to
be involved emotionally and, through retention, for a long time. Photographs
are an easy way to take and share images. Photographs are powerful media as
they evoke emotions and responses on the basis of their inherently superior
ability to communicate along a wider range of stimuli.
NCCI’s Commission on
Communications and Relations is having a PHOTO CONTEST called “A shot
at hope” in connection with our quadrennial theme “Gospel in a groaning
world”. -See poster- As the name of the Photo contest suggests, (“shot” being a
pun for ‘camera shot’ and as ‘a chance to do something’), the effort is to get
people to capture the “hope” aspect of life and living. It is an attempt to get
people to focus on the possibilities aspect with a view to offering,
through the captured photograph, encouragement and inspiration amidst the gloom
and despondency that seems to surround us. It is hoped that through this
contest, people may be able to look at (and use) the camera tool as a
medium for positive engagement. As against despair often leading to
resignation and powerlessness, these photos are expected to draw attention to,
and communicate HOPE and encouragement leading to possibilities and
empowerment.
